What is a Semester GPA?

Your semester GPA is the GPA you earn in one single semester. Not your overall GPA. Not your total college GPA. Just the grades from this current term.

How Does the Semester GPA Formula Work?

Your semester GPA is calculated by dividing your total grade points by your total credit hours.

Semester GPA=Total Grade Points EarnedTotal Credit Hours\text{Semester GPA} = \frac{\text{Total Grade Points Earned}}{\text{Total Credit Hours}}

Each grade you get (A, B, C etc.) has a grade point value. You multiply that value by the credit hours of that course. Do that for every course. Add them all up. Then divide by total credits. That’s your semester GPA.

How to Use the Semester GPA Calculator

Example

Suppose John is a second-year student. He has 5 courses this semester.

Course NameGrade PointsCredits
BiologyA (4.0)3
MathB+ (3.3)4
EnglishA- (3.7)3
PhysicsB (3.0)4
HistoryA (4.0)2

He enters all these in the calculator and clicks Calculate.

Total Grade Points=(4.0×3)+(3.3×4)+(3.7×3)+(3.0×4)+(4.0×2)=12+13.2+11.1+12+8=56.3Total Credits=16Semester GPA=56.316=3.52\begin{aligned} \text{Total Grade Points} &= (4.0 \times 3) + (3.3 \times 4) + (3.7 \times 3) + (3.0 \times 4) + (4.0 \times 2) \\ &= 12 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 12 + 8 \\ &= 56.3 \\ \\ \text{Total Credits} &= 16 \\ \\ \text{Semester GPA} &= \frac{56.3}{16} \\ &= 3.52 \end{aligned}
