What is a Weighted GPA and How is Weighted GPA Calculated?
A weighted GPA gives you extra credit for taking harder courses like AP or Honors. A regular unweighted GPA treats every class the same, whether you took AP Physics or a free period elective. That is not fair, right? Weighted GPA fixes that. It adds bonus points on top of your grade based on course difficulty.
Note: The standard scale goes up to 5.0 instead of 4.0.
So how is weighted GPA calculated exactly? It takes your regular grade points and adds a bonus based on the difficulty of your course. Honors classes add 0.5 and AP or IB classes add 1.0 on top. Our weighted GPA calculator handles all of that automatically.
Weighted and Unweighted GPA: What is the Difference?
Unweighted GPA: This is the standard 4.0 scale. Every class is treated equally. An A gives you 4.0 whether it is a basic class or an advanced one.
Weighted GPA: This goes beyond 4.0. An AP or IB class can push your GPA up to 5.0 because the difficulty level is counted. Honors classes usually add 0.5 points and AP or IB classes add 1.0 point on top of your regular grade value.
So if your weighted GPA is higher than your unweighted GPA, it actually means you are pushing yourself with harder courses. Colleges notice that.
If you want to convert your weighted GPA to unweighted, our tool shows both values in the same result. No need to calculate separately. You can also use the unweighted to weighted GPA calculator mode by selecting Regular for all courses and comparing the two outputs.
How to Calculate GPA with Weighted Grades: Formula Explained
Weighted GPA is publicly available so our calculator tool uses the same.
Each course gives you weighted grade points which is calculated as: (Grade Points + Course Level Bonus) x Credits
Grade Points are the standard values like A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on. The Course Level Bonus is 0 for Regular, 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB. Credits are the credit hours your course carries.
Once all your courses are added, the tool divides the total weighted points by total credits and gives you your weighted GPA instantly.
This is how you calculate weighted average GPA manually. But if you do not want to do this for every course, just enter your data in our GPA calculator with weighted grades above and get your result in one click.

Who Should Use This Weighted GPA Calculator? (High School Students Especially)
If you are a high school student planning for college applications, this weighted GPA calculator is built for you. Especially if you are taking AP, IB, or Honors courses and want to know exactly where you stand. It also answers the common question: how do I calculate my weighted GPA without doing the math by hand?
What is a Good Weighted GPA for College Admissions?
Most top universities see a weighted GPA above 4.0 as competitive since it signals you took harder courses and still performed well. A weighted GPA between 3.5 and 4.0 is solid for most colleges. Below 3.5 is not a dealbreaker but strengthening your course load with AP or Honors classes can help.
Keep in mind that colleges also look at your unweighted GPA alongside the weighted one. That is why our calculator shows both values at once. You can compare them and understand exactly how your course difficulty is affecting your overall GPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
What scale does this weighted GPA calculator use?
It uses the standard 4.0 base scale with weighted bonuses on top. Regular courses stay on 4.0, Honors courses get a +0.5 boost, and AP or IB courses get a +1.0 boost. Most high schools in the US follow this exact method.
What if my school does not use AP or Honors courses?
Just select Regular for every course in the Course Level dropdown. The calculator will give you your standard GPA on a 4.0 scale, same as unweighted. Works perfectly fine either way.
What are credits and how do I know what to enter?
Credits represent how much weight a course carries. Most full-year academic courses are worth 1 credit. Half-year or elective courses are usually 0.5. Check your report card or ask your school counselor if you are not sure. The number matters because our calculator weights your GPA by credits, not just by number of courses.
How do you calculate a weighted GPA?
Multiply each course’s grade points plus the course level bonus by its credits. Add all those values together and divide by total credits. Or just use our weighted GPA calculator above and skip the manual work.
Is this a weighted and unweighted GPA calculator?
Yes. Every time you click Calculate, the tool shows your weighted GPA and your unweighted GPA side by side in the result panel. No need to run two separate calculations.
Does this weighted GPA calculator work for high school students?
Yes. It is designed specifically for high school students taking Regular, Honors, or AP/IB courses. The course level bonuses (+0.5 and +1.0) match the standard method used by most US high schools.
How do I convert my weighted GPA to unweighted?
Select Regular for every course in the Course Level dropdown and click Calculate. That gives you your unweighted GPA. Compare it with your weighted result to see how much your AP or Honors courses are helping.
