Suppose you are a Class 11 student and your teacher gives you this problem in your physics practical. A metal block has a mass of 540 grams and a volume of 200 cm³. Find its density.

Mixing units without converting: This is where most students go wrong. If you enter mass in grams but volume in m³, your density answer will be way off. Always double-check that your input units actually match what you entered. Our tool handles the conversion automatically, so as long as you select the right unit next to each value, you’re safe.
Entering zero for volume or density: Volume can’t be zero (you can’t divide by zero). Density can’t be zero either when you’re solving for volume. If you accidentally enter 0, the tool will warn you before calculating. Just re-check your values.

Density: Density tells you how much matter is packed into a given space. For example, a steel ball and a plastic ball can be the same size, but the steel one is much heavier. Why? Because steel has higher density. More mass is packed into the same volume.
The standard unit of density is kg/m³. But in most school and lab problems you will see g/cm³ as well.
Water has a density of 1 g/cm³. If an object has a density less than 1 g/cm³, it floats. If it is more than 1, it sinks. That is why ships made of steel can float, because their total density including the hollow space inside is less than water.
Mass: Mass is simply the amount of matter in an object. It does not change whether you are on Earth or on the Moon. Don’t confuse it with weight. Weight depends on gravity. Mass does not. It’s measured in kilograms, grams, or pounds depending on your system. Volume: Volume is the total space an object occupies. A big box takes more space than a small box. That space is volume. It is measured in m³, cm³, liters, or milliliters depending on your use case.
The whole calculator is based on one triangle relationship. Here is how it works:
If you cover Density (ρ), the remaining two tell you: Mass divided by Volume. If you cover Mass (m), you get: Density multiplied by Volume. If you cover Volume (V), you get: Mass divided by Density.
This triangle is one of the most useful shortcuts in physics. Once you understand it, you never forget the formula again
If you need to find volume, rearrange the main formula: V = m ÷ ρ. So if an object has a mass of 800 g and a density of 2 g/cm³, its volume is 800 ÷ 2 = 400 cm³.
