To get the curved grade, take the square root of the raw percentage and multiply the result by 10. Because square roots grow quickly at the low end of the scale and slowly at the high end, the curve naturally gives bigger jumps to weaker scores.

Worked example: Suppose a student scores 64% on a test.

Why Use a Square Root Curve Instead of a Flat Curve?

A flat curve adds the same number of points to every student. If the highest score in the class was 85% and the test was meant to top out at 100%, a flat curve might add 15 points to everyone, including a student who only scored 20%.

The problem with that approach is obvious once you think about it. The student who scored 20% goes to 35%, still failing, while the student who scored 85% jumps to a perfect 100%. The curve barely helped the people who needed it most.

A square root curve fixes this. Because the formula scales by the square root of the score, students at the bottom of the distribution get the largest gains. A 20% becomes roughly 45%, while an 85% only moves to about 92%.
